Key takeaways

  • Proven in service: Drucker chairs furnish Café de Flore and Café Bleu in Paris, Café Gijón in Madrid and Oxford Exchange in Florida — and venues in more than 80 countries.
  • Two frames, the same hand weaving: natural rattan for interiors and covered terraces; aluminum for year-round outdoor use — nine standard tones from a single piece, custom RAL from 200 pieces.
  • Customization: around thirty glossy and twenty satin fiber colors, 50+ weaving patterns, and the option of a jacquard designed exclusively for your project.
  • Lead times: 2 to 3 weeks for in-stock models, 4 to 15 weeks for exclusive made-to-order production, with furniture on loan while a custom order is made.
  • Built to be restored: a hand-woven chair is re-woven in the atelier at the end of its cycle, not discarded.

Hand-woven rattan chairs have equipped the terraces of Parisian cafés since 1895, and they still do: Café de Flore, Café Bleu in the 17th arrondissement and the Breizh Café addresses seat their guests on chairs woven in our ateliers. That record is the simplest answer to the question professionals ask us first — yes, hand-woven rattan seating stands up to daily commercial use.

For a contract project, the essentials are these. Two frames: natural rattan for interiors and covered terraces, aluminum for furniture that stays outside year-round. In both cases, the seat and back are woven by hand in the same fiber. Around fifty fiber colors and more than fifty weaving patterns, which can be combined into a jacquard exclusive to your venue. In-stock models ship in 2 to 3 weeks; made-to-order pieces take 4 to 15 weeks. And when a chair finally shows wear, it is re-woven in the atelier rather than replaced.

Maison Louis Drucker supports more than 1,000 professional projects a year through a dedicated contract team. This guide covers what specifiers of hospitality rattan furniture need: construction, frames, customization, durability, lead times and how our Trade Program works.

Why Hospitality Still Chooses Hand-Woven Rattan

A restaurant chair works harder than almost any other piece of furniture. It is moved dozens of times a day, stacked, knocked, rained on, sat on for hours. Most contract furniture is engineered down to a price to survive this — and replaced every few years. Mass-market copies of the bistro chair typically last about three years.

The Maison Louis Drucker rattan chair takes the opposite approach. It was designed for exactly this life — it was born for the cafés of Paris — and it is built to be maintained and restored rather than discarded. Parisian cafés have run their terraces with these chairs for over a century, and the same chairs are re-woven, restored, re-varnished and returned to service.

Three qualities explain why designers keep specifying it:

  • Identity. The woven seat is a signature. With around fifty fiber colors and more than fifty patterns, a venue's furniture — chairs, armchairs, stools, banquettes — can match its awning, its logo or its floor tiles — precisely, and exclusively.
  • Longevity. The weaving fibers are indelible and resistant to heat, humidity and impact. The chair supports years of daily commercial use.
  • Repairability. The same technique that makes the chair makes it possible to restore it. Restoration and re-weaving extend the life of an installation instead of forcing a repurchase.

For the fundamentals of the furniture itself — its history and how to recognize the authentic construction — see how to spot an authentic French bistro chair.

The Construction, in Brief

Every chair is hand-upholstered in the atelier: a frame in natural rattan — or aluminum for permanent outdoor use — and a seat and back woven strand by strand in fibers dyed through (glossy Rilsan® or satin Raucord®), indelible and resistant to heat, humidity and impact. Weaving a single chair takes 3 to 30 hours.

That is what separates an original from a machine-made copy: imposed colors and caning, fiber that deforms in the heat, no possibility of restoration. The full process is on our manufacturing page; the hallmarks to check are in how to spot an authentic French bistro chair; and the full specification checklist is in Specifying Rattan Seating.

Indoor, Covered Terrace or Full Outdoor: Choosing the Frame

The single most important specification decision is the frame, and it follows from the exposure of the setting.

Setting Frame Notes
Dining room, bar, lobby Natural rattan The classic. Warm, light, no weather constraint.
Covered terrace (awning) Natural rattan The traditional Parisian setting. Shelter from rain; dry winter storage (15 Oct – 15 Mar in Europe).
Open terrace, poolside, rooftop Aluminum Stays outside year-round. Does not rot or rust.
Commercial terrace left set up Aluminum All-weather, minimal seasonal handling.

In short: natural rattan is semi-outdoor (sheltered terrace in season, dry storage over winter — our winterization service can handle it); aluminum is fully outdoor, in nine standard tones from a single piece, custom RAL from 200 pieces with a validated sample. The weaves and colors are identical on both frames.

The Ranges: Chairs, Armchairs, Stools and Custom Pieces

The bistro family is a catalogue of named models — Le Fouquet's, Orléans, Chenonceau, Montsouris, Seine, Villette, Bastille, Saint-Michel, Parisienne, among others — each available across the whole palette of colors and weaves. A note of vocabulary for specification documents: a chair has no armrests; with armrests, it is an armchair, like the Haussmann chosen for the Grand Café.

The same construction extends to bar stools, benches and banquettes. The atelier also builds custom pieces to a project's dimensions, within made-to-order lead times.

Colors, Weaves and Exclusive Jacquards

Customization gives a contract project its identity: around fifty fiber colors, more than fifty weaving patterns from Basic to Masterpiece — and, by combining them, a jacquard exclusive to your venue rather than a motif sold by the meter. Philippe Model created his exclusive weave with our ateliers for his 2026 collection.

When a hotel or restaurant group creates its own weave in its own colors, it becomes its exclusive owner. The palette and patterns are presented in our guide to colors and weaving patterns; the project angle is in Custom Colors & Weaves for Hospitality Projects.

Durability, Care and Restoration in Commercial Use

Maison Louis Drucker chairs regularly come back to the atelier after 30, 40, even 50 years of service to be restored: repaired, re-varnished, re-woven. Upkeep is minimal — a damp cloth and mild soapy water, plus the terrace rules above for natural rattan. Our maintenance and winter storage services take it entirely off an operator's hands.

At the end of a cycle, a worn seat is re-woven rather than replaced: the chairs are an asset that is maintained, not a consumable. The detailed evidence is in Are Rattan Chairs Durable Enough for Restaurants?

Which Venues, Which Seating

Our contract team supports projects across the range of hospitality and commercial settings — from rattan furniture for restaurants and cafés to hotels, terraces, yachts, waiting rooms, pools, gardens, offices and public spaces. A few patterns from those 1,000 yearly projects:

  • Café and restaurant terraces. The home ground. Stackable models in Rilsan® or Raucord® fiber; natural rattan under awnings, aluminum where the terrace stays set up in all weather. The chair is often dressed in the venue's colors — the first thing a passer-by sees.
  • Hotels. Different frames for different zones: natural rattan in lobbies, lounges and breakfast rooms; aluminum at the pool and on rooftops. One weave specified across zones gives the property its unity.
  • Restaurant groups. A group that creates its own exclusive jacquard in its colors becomes its owner: re-orders are reproduced exclusively for it, identically — the weave is documented in the atelier.
  • Yachts and outdoor residences. Aluminum frames and always the same hand-woven, weather-resistant fiber, in settings where salt air and permanent exposure rule out most natural materials.
  • Offices, boutiques and public spaces. Natural rattan, as the use is indoors. Waiting rooms and reception areas where the seating has to signal care — and survive it.

If the setting is exposed, start from the frame decision above; if the identity is the driver, start from the weave. The specification checklist in Specifying Rattan Seating walks through both in order.

Lead Times, Stock and Logistics

Contract calendars are unforgiving, so here are the real numbers.

  • In-stock models: 2 to 3 weeks. Our team keeps you informed of current and upcoming stock.
  • Made-to-order: 4 to 15 weeks, depending on the model, the weave and the quantity.
  • Custom RAL aluminum: from 200 pieces, with a validated sample before production.

Furniture on loan during production. A custom order can take time to make, so we lend the client available chairs until the order is ready.

To secure a specification before ordering, the contract team provides:

  • Color swatches and weave samples, dispatched quickly by post — including 15 cm (6 in) woven squares for advanced projects;
  • 3D assets in standard formats (.obj, .dxf, .cad, .skp) for renderings and layout plans.

For international projects, the team advises on transportation and import/export procedures, and can assist with project financing. Delivery, installation phasing and re-orders are planned with your project calendar.

How a Project Runs, Step by Step

Most contract projects follow the same five steps. Knowing them up front makes the calendar predictable.

  1. Brief. You send plans, quantities, the setting (indoor, covered, exposed) and any brand colors. The contract team studies the project and proposes models and weaves.
  2. Samples. Color swatches and weave samples go out by post. For advanced projects, 15 cm (6 in) woven squares show the exact color-and-pattern combination at real scale.
  3. Renderings. 3D files (.obj, .dxf, .cad, .skp) let your team place the chairs in layout plans and client presentations before anything is ordered.
  4. Order and production. Stock items ship in 2 to 3 weeks; made-to-order pieces enter the atelier calendar at 4 to 15 weeks. Custom RAL aluminum production starts once the sample is validated. For custom orders, we lend available chairs until the order is ready.
  5. Delivery and after. Transportation and import/export procedures are handled with the team, including export projects. Afterwards come the services: maintenance, winterization, restoration — and re-orders woven to match.

The Trade Program: How We Work with Professionals

Maison Louis Drucker supports more than 1,000 professional projects a year: restaurants, hotels, terraces, yachts, waiting rooms, pools and gardens. When choosing a café furniture supplier, three questions matter: in which venues are the chairs already in service, can the exact weave be reproduced years later for a re-order, and who restores them.

The Trade Program is built to answer all three, around a sales team dedicated to professionals.

  • A dedicated contact to define models, colors and weaves with you, and follow the project through delivery.
  • A professional account for architects, decorators and hoteliers, with preferential rates through our contract department.
  • Services beyond the sale: rental for events or short seasons, maintenance, winterization storage in our warehouse, and restoration.
  • The showroom and workshop, open to designers and operators — come see the weaving and discuss your project in front of the chairs.

Chairs, armchairs, bar stools, banquettes: the same construction covers the whole room.

The clearest proof of contract performance is the client list, and ours has been public for a century — the luxury cafés of Paris.

The chairs of Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots are woven in our ateliers. One model from the range, Le Fouquet's, woven in our two-tone checkerboard, shows what a specification document looks like: 5 kg (11 lb), 85 cm (33.5 in) high, Manille rattan frame, satin Raucord® fiber, semi-outdoor, stackable.

In 2026, architect Joseph Dirand selected the house to furnish the 75-meter terrace of the Grand Café at the Grand Palais in Paris, with a Haussmann armchair in an exclusive olive-green weave — fibers specified for intensive professional use.

In recent months, our ateliers have also furnished:

  • Oxford Exchange (Tampa, Florida), with 62 aluminum Bastille chairs and 17 meters (about 56 ft) of Bastille banquette (2026);
  • Parc (Philadelphia, Starr Restaurants), in 2026;
  • Hôtel Le Méridien Étoile (Paris), a project led with interior designer Fanny Mantécon Malapert (2026);
  • Café Bleu (Paris), with 88 Chenonceau chairs (2026);
  • Bagatelle (Saint-Tropez), in 2026;
  • Café Gijón (Madrid), a historic café, with 280 Grenelle armchairs (2026);
  • RE-NAA (Stavanger, Norway), a fine-dining restaurant: seating, banquette, tabletops and bases (2026);
  • Goldene Waage (Frankfurt), with 60 chairs in the aluminum version (late 2025);
  • Sturehof (Stockholm), late 2025;
  • Breizh Café, which we support on its openings: Odéon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Annecy and Levallois in 2026.

The full story of the café chairs is in our case study, The Chairs of Café de Flore & the Le Fouquet's Model.

About Maison Louis Drucker

Maison Louis Drucker was founded in Paris in 1885 and has done one thing since: rattan furniture woven by hand. The family-owned atelier is one of a handful in the world still practicing the craft, and holds the French state's “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” distinction.

Design and maintenance are carried out entirely in France; fabrication takes place in France or in Indonesia. Every chair is made to order or drawn from our own collections — and every chair can come home to be restored.
